Excursion

Visit to the Kloster Neustift/Abbazia di Novacella and its winery. The Abbazia is at walking distance from Brixen-Bressanone.
The Augustinian monastery of Novacella/Neustift (founded in 1142), embedded in the northern wineyeards of South Tyrol, is the largest monastery complex in Tyrol. 30 canons regulars still live here. The outstanding external architecture is a wonderful sight along with treasures within, particularly the monastery library.
The monastery basilica with its powerful silence is very impressive. A special gem is the "World Wonder Well" or "Weltwunder-Brunnen" which was built in 1508. Bearing depictions of the Seven Wonders of the World it is an amazing discovery; the contemporary monastery of Novacella was added to it in 1669 as the eight wonder. The medieval wine cellar is especially worth visiting and relates a monastic history of its own; wines from the Abbey´s medieval cellars produce above all excellent white wines. The historical monastery garden is situated at the entrance to the complex. The garden's interesting features include a redwood tree, a herb garden with local and exotic herbs, and an aviary.
At the end of the guided tour we will fortify ourselves in the monastery's own wine bar with wines from the monastery vineyards along with South Tyrolean specialties such as "speck" (cured, smoked raw ham), cheese, "Kaminwurzen" (smoked sausages), crunchy "Schüttelbrot" and plenty more.
